I recently visited Kloovenburg Wine & Olive Estate in Riebeek Kasteel, where a morning hike up Kasteelberg turned into one of those unexpectedly memorable Swartland experiences. The mountain offers a range of hiking routes, from easy walks to more technical climbs, making it accessible for different fitness and experience levels.
A Different Side of the Swartland

Kasteelberg is not quite like the rest of the Swartland I thought I knew. On a previous hike in the area, the landscape was classic renosterveld—muted, dry, and ruggedly sparse. Here, though, the vegetation shifts into fynbos, a sign that the mountain sits on different geological ground. I later learned that caves are scattered across the range, adding to its mystery. Whether you choose one of the gentler paths or tackle the steeper sections, the beauty of the mountain makes every step worthwhile.
Wine, Olives and Recovery

Back at the estate, the day ended in exactly the right way: by the fireplace with wine and olives, while the friendly cellar master explained fermentation with calm authority. I took a long sip of Sauvignon Blanc—bright, tropical, and the perfect recovery after a steep hike. I even bought a bottle to take home, and it’s still sitting in my fridge waiting for a special occasion.
The Kloovenburg Experience

Kloovenburg itself offers an easy, reassuring rhythm. The farm dates back to the time of Simon van der Stel and has been in the Du Toit family since the 1950s. Today, it’s all olives, wine, warm hospitality, and Labradors that greet you as if your return from the mountain was always part of the plan.
