  • Field Notes From The Riebeeck Valley

    Late summer is harvest time

Late summer in the Riebeek Valley is harvest time. The surrounding vineyards and olive groves hum quietly with activity, and the air carries the faint scent of sun-warmed earth and ripe grapes ready for picking.

The long stoep and art woven into daily life

The Royal Hotel sits in the heart of town, its long stoep stretching out like an invitation to pause. I found myself there most afternoons, sipping a glass of wine and watching life unfold.

Art feels woven into daily life here rather than staged for visitors. Galleries and studios sit comfortably alongside cafés and small shops. Now and then, I caught glimpses of local artists at work, their creativity drifting into the streets as naturally as the afternoon sun.

    The famous stoep

Across from the hotel is a short street — Kort Straat — lined with historic buildings and small shops selling leather goods and art.

    The pace of life

Beyond the town, Kasteelberg stands watch, with vineyards and olive groves spreading outward like a soft embrace. The land doesn’t dwarf the village; it holds it gently, enclosing it rather than overwhelming it.

What stayed with me most wasn’t a single building, café, or moment — it was the scale and pace of life. A village where daily life happens on foot. Where art drifts through cafés, galleries, and back gardens.

Late afternoon light in the back garden of the hotel.

Weekends, I’m told, are busier. Sometimes there are poetry readings on Sundays, and in August, the Solo Studios exhibition draws visitors to the valley for several days.

A beautiful old townhouse in Riebeeck Kasteel

If you head towards Riebeeck West, you’ll find the Riebeeck Valley Garden Centre. There’s an owl that sleeps in a tree at the entrance — the woman working there pointed it out to me. In fact, there are two owls. Behind the nursery, there’s also a small coffee shop, a quiet place to sit among the plants.

    The Garden Centre

My time in Riebeeck was too short. I still need to return for the wineries, olive tastings, and more café hopping.

For now, my cup is full simply from visiting this beautiful town where you can walk everywhere, and people greet you like neighbours. I have a feeling we’ll meet again — the next time I’m in the Valley.
